Dysport in Houston

Dysport is one of the two neurotoxins I carry at MV (the other is Jeuveau). It is botulinum toxin type A, same drug class as Botox, with a slightly different formulation that tends to onset faster and spread more diffusely from the injection site. For some patients that diffusion is exactly what we want; for others it is the reason I reach for Jeuveau instead. The choice between the two is something we sort out at consultation.

Dysport has been in use globally since the 1990s and has been FDA-approved in the U.S. since 2009. It is made by Galderma.

What it treats

  • Frown lines between the eyebrows (the "11s" - the FDA-approved indication)
  • Forehead lines
  • Crow's feet at the outer corners of the eyes
  • Some off-label work in the lower face for specific patients

Products used in this treatment: Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA, manufactured by Galderma)

How Dysport compares to Jeuveau and Botox

All three products work the same way mechanistically. The differences are in onset, diffusion, and unit conversion.

Onset: Dysport patients typically see early effect at day 2 or 3, with full effect by day 7 to 10. That is a few days faster than Botox or Jeuveau on average.

Diffusion: Dysport molecules spread slightly more from the injection point than Botox or Jeuveau. This is useful when treating a broader area like the forehead, where you want even coverage. It is a reason to be cautious in precise small-area work near the brow, where you do not want the product migrating into the eyelid muscle.

Unit conversion: Dysport is dosed in different units than Botox. Roughly 2.5 to 3 Dysport units equal 1 Botox unit. If you are coming to me from Botox, I will convert your previous dose into the Dysport equivalent before we start.

Why I prefer Dysport for some patients

The patient profiles where I tend to reach for Dysport first:

  • Someone with a wider forehead who needs even coverage of the frontalis muscle.
  • Someone with broader, more diffuse frown lines rather than two deep central 11s.
  • A patient with an event in 10 to 12 days who wants the result to be settled by then. Dysport's faster onset matters in that window.
  • A patient who has done Botox or Jeuveau and felt the result took too long to kick in.

For precise small-volume work (a lip flip, a careful bunny line touch), Jeuveau is my usual reach. There is no "better" product; it is situational.

What the appointment is like

Same as any neurotoxin appointment with me: about 20 to 30 minutes total, 5 minutes of actual injection, no numbing needed. You can drive home and go back to work the same hour. Avoid lying flat or pressing on the treated areas for four hours; skip heavy exercise the day of treatment.

How long Dysport lasts

Most patients see 3 to 4 months of effect. Patients with more muscle mass or faster metabolisms sometimes get closer to 3 months. Patients with more delicate musculature can stretch to 4 to 5. With consistent re-treatment at 12 to 16 week intervals, many patients find the duration extends slightly over time as the treated muscles weaken from chronic relaxation.

Common questions about dysport in houston

Is Dysport the same as Botox?
Same drug class (botulinum toxin type A), different brand, different formulation. The mechanism is identical. The differences are in onset speed, how much the product diffuses from the injection point, and unit dosing. The choice between them is more about which is right for your specific anatomy and timeline than one being broadly better.
How fast does Dysport work?
Most patients see early effect at day 2 or 3 and full effect by day 7 to 10. Faster than Botox or Jeuveau on average.
How long does Dysport last?
3 to 4 months for most patients. Some go a little less, some a little more.
How is Dysport priced?
Per unit, similar to Botox or Jeuveau, but because Dysport units are smaller you usually need more of them per area. The total cost per treatment area tends to come out roughly comparable.
Can I switch from Botox or Jeuveau to Dysport?
Yes, and many patients do. I convert your previous dose to the Dysport equivalent and we go from there. We see each other at two weeks to assess and add if needed.
Does Dysport hurt?
The injections feel like quick pinpricks. Most patients describe them as well-tolerated without numbing.
