Masseter Botox in Houston

Masseter neurotoxin treatment has two distinct patient populations: the patient who wants a slimmer, more contoured lower face, and the patient who clenches and grinds and is looking for relief from jaw tension and morning headaches. The treatment is the same for both. The expected result, and the cosmetic side effect of the medical version, is what differs.

In my practice I see a roughly even split between the two reasons. A lot of patients come in for the second reason and learn about the first.

What it treats

  • Wide-looking jawline from masseter muscle hypertrophy
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding) and chronic jaw clenching
  • TMJ-related muscle tension and headaches
  • Asymmetric jaw appearance from uneven masseter development

Products used in this treatment: Jeuveau (prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs), Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA)

How masseter dosing works

The masseter is a much larger muscle than the small expression muscles we treat in the upper face, so dosing is correspondingly higher. A typical first treatment is 15 to 30 units of Jeuveau per side, depending on the muscle bulk I feel on exam.

Patients with strong clenching often need the higher end of the range. Patients seeking subtle jawline slimming usually do well at the lower end. We tailor at the visit.

Timeline for cosmetic jawline change

The functional effect (less clenching, less morning jaw soreness) starts within 7 to 14 days of treatment. The cosmetic effect of jaw slimming develops more slowly. As the muscle is consistently relaxed over weeks, it gradually atrophies (gets smaller). Visible jawline narrowing usually shows up at the 6 to 8 week mark and continues to develop with repeat treatments at 4 to 6 month intervals.

Patients who want a meaningful change in jawline width should plan on at least 2 to 3 treatments over a year. A single treatment produces some softening but is not the dramatic before-after you see in some marketing material.

TMJ and bruxism considerations

For patients coming in primarily for clenching or grinding, the relief from masseter neurotoxin is often immediate-feeling: less tension when you wake up, less jaw fatigue at the end of the day, fewer tension headaches. The dental community has been using this approach for years.

It is not a replacement for a properly fitted night guard if your grinding is wearing your teeth. It is a complement. I tell most of my bruxism patients to keep using the night guard while we treat the masseters.

Side effects specific to masseter treatment

  • Some temporary chewing fatigue, especially with tough foods, in the first 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Rare paradoxical bulging on smiling if injection is too superficial - we use proper technique to avoid this.
  • Very rare temporary asymmetry of smile if neurotoxin migrates into other facial muscles - again, technique-dependent.
  • The bruxism effect wears off as the neurotoxin wears off, so if the muscle is treated, the clenching tends to return at the same intensity unless we maintain.

Common questions about masseter botox in houston

How long does masseter Botox last?
For the functional effect (less clenching), 3 to 4 months. For the cosmetic effect (jawline slimming), the muscle atrophy is more durable - many patients can stretch maintenance to 5 or 6 months after a year of consistent treatment.
Will I be able to chew normally?
Yes, with mild fatigue on tough foods for the first 2 to 3 weeks. Most patients do not notice the chewing change at all after the adaptation period.
How much jawline slimming should I expect?
A single treatment produces visible softening over 6 to 8 weeks. Meaningful change in jaw width usually requires 2 to 3 treatments over a year. Individual results vary considerably with starting muscle bulk and how strongly you clench.
Does insurance cover masseter for TMJ?
Some plans cover masseter neurotoxin for documented bruxism or TMJ disorder. Coverage is inconsistent. We can help with prior authorization paperwork when appropriate.
How much does it cost?
Priced per unit. Because masseter dosing is higher than upper-face dosing (15 to 30 units per side vs. 4 to 10 units per upper-face area), the per-treatment cost is correspondingly higher. Quoted at consultation.
Will it change my smile?
Should not, with proper injection technique. The masseter sits below the smile muscles and we inject deep into the masseter belly specifically to avoid affecting the smile.
